Ballroom Boudoir takes you behind the scenes to the intimate expressive side of Montréal’s legendary House of Pride, by photographer and House member Stephen LaReign Hues. All of these images were shot on 35mm film, with an insider vantage point, in drag with high heels and lipstick. The full exhibit was presented at Centre Never Apart in Montreal, 2021.
As a member of House of Pride, Stephen LaReign performed and photographed their journey onstage, in the clubs, on the streets, and in the studio. From 1993-2000, House of Pride rocked the stages of Montréal and beyond, dazzling audiences with their unique take on gender and cultural diversity, while delivering a hopeful message of love, unity, and peace. House of Pride members are Jackie Jet, Frigid, Kiet Ha, Gartina J., Stephen LaReign Hues, and Marta Marta.
They became known for their entertaining performances where they made use of their platform to champion the ongoing dialogue around gender politics, racial equality, LGBTQ2+ rights, oppression, abuse, consciousness for the environment, and a new level of respect for mother earth: the ultimate goddess.
